Cereal is, the global closure solutions company for wine and spirits has released its first sustainability report from 2023, highlighting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) matters.
Crealis Group employs 1,500 people worldwide across 15 production sites, including four in France, three in Italy, two in Spain and two in the US. The group supplies to more than 70 countries worldwide and produces 5.2 billion units annually.
As a large global company, Crealis has recognised the environmental impact of its operations and has made significant strides in its climate transition. It has set emission reduction targets that align with scientific recommendations and have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
In its first sustainability report for 2023, Crealis highlights its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts, focusing on the circular economy and sustainable design. The report details how the company recycles industrial waste and incorporates recycled raw materials into its products.
Reportedly, Crealis sent 93% of post-industrial waste from its European entities to recycling partners. For example, the company’s facility in France, Sparflex, reintegrates polyethene scraps back into the production cycle. In Italy, Enoplastic has implemented a solvent recovery plant that allows solvents to be reused indefinitely, reducing waste significantly.
In Spain, Rivercap reuses 100% of its non-coloured tin scraps from production, which helps minimise waste and optimise resource utilisation. Meanwhile, Maverick has adopted renewable energy in the US by installing solar panels, which generate sustainable electricity for its production processes.
Crealis has also developed the Green Tech range, which offers solutions from recycled, bio-based, and compostable materials. The company minimises virgin resources and uses recycled polyethene to enhance industrial waste management practices. One of its products, R-Derma, is a polylaminate material used in foils and capsules that contains 60% recycled polyethylene.
The company has agreed to reduce absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42% for scopes 1 and 2 compared to the 2022 baseline year and reduce scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030. These targets underscore the group’s determination to address global climate challenges and contribute to the 1.5°C trajectory outlined in the Paris Agreement and the IPCC’s recommendations.
Social efforts
Crealis has committed itself to promoting diversity and inclusion. In 2023, 27% of managerial positions were held by women. The company supports pay equity and professional growth while ensuring a safe work environment. In line with its commitment to gender equality, Crealis highlights how it engaged employees on International Women’s Rights Day, emphasising respect, equality, and solidarity in the workplace and society.
Crealis also actively supports local projects that align with its values, collaborating with schools and raising awareness about recycling and waste management. For instance, it organised a major waste collection on World Cleanup Day. Supercap partnered with a local supermarket to introduce a Green Money Eco-Compactor, which rewards users with discount vouchers for recycling PET bottles. Similarly, Pedi replaced traditional Christmas gifts with tree planting through Treedom, promoting biodiversity and reinforcing the group’s commitment to a greener future.
Michele Moglia, CEO of Crealis Group, commented: “As CEO of Crealis, I am proud to present our first sustainability report, marking a significant milestone in our journey as a global leader in closure solutions for wines, spirits, olive oil, and more. Despite challenges such as inflation, excessive stock levels, and declining wine consumption, Crealis has demonstrated resilience.”
"We have adapted to new opportunities while focusing on sustainability, innovation, and quality. I express my gratitude to our employees worldwide for their dedication. Together, we ensure that Crealis is well-positioned to lead the global closure market toward a sustainable future.”
