During FITUR 2025, the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) and the Costa Rican Tourism Board announced that Costa Rica will be the next destination to support the organization’s global initiative: Hotel Sustainability Basics (Basics), designed to promote hotel sustainability internationally.

Hotel Sustainability Basics is a WTTC initiative that helps take hoteliers on the first steps of their sustainability journey, contributing to decarbonization, and answering the global call to generate inclusive and sustainable growth in the hospitality sector. Through this, Costa Rican hotels will integrate a set of globally recognized indicators, supervised by the renowned advisors SGS and Greenview, which guarantee high standards in sustainability. With these measures, Costa Rica reinforces its position as a leader in responsible tourism in the region, standing out for its environmental and social commitment.

In the last few decades, Costa Rica has promoted sustainability in the tourism sector through the Tourism Sustainability Certification (CST) program, a pioneering initiative that recognizes sustainable business management. This is done by enhancing socioeconomic, cultural and environmental work, and helping improve the quality of life of local communities in tourism development centres.

Over 6,000 hotels in more than 80 countries on all continents have joined the global Basics initiative which, through 12 key criteria, seeks to reduce carbon emissions, optimize energy and water use, improve waste management, and ensure that local communities obtain tangible benefits.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President and CEO, stated: “We are proud to announce that independent hotel management companies and unique accommodation providers in Costa Rica will take their first steps in sustainability by adhering to the Basics criteria.

“This initiative unites hotels, industry partners and sustainability standards to create a resilient and planet-responsible future. Surpassing 6,000 verified properties demonstrates Travel & Tourism’s willingness to embrace sustainability globally.”

Costa Rica has been a pioneer in the development of tourism sustainability standards, and we are pleased to join forces with the World Travel and Tourism Council and its Hotel Sustainability Basics initiative. This joint action marks a first step for lodging companies that wish to start their journey towards sustainability and reinforces our commitment to responsibility for the benefit of both our country and global development,” said William Rodríguez, Minister of Tourism.

Costa Rica joins a global movement where leading destinations, including Mauritius, the United Arab Emirates, Colombia and Mexico support Hotel Sustainability Basics. This global effort also has the support of major hotel brands such as Jin Jiang, Louvre Hotels Group, Choice Hotels and Radisson Hotel Group. Additionally, Basics has positioned itself as an accessible resource for hoteliers around the world, available in multiple languages including English, Spanish and Japanese, enabling practical adoption in international markets.

The collaboration between the WTTC and the Costa Rican Tourism Institute strengthens sustainability as an essential pillar of the country’s development model by meeting the demands of a traveller who is increasingly aware of their impact on the planet. Leading by example, Costa Rica demonstrates that sustainability is the best path to more equitable, respectful and forward-looking tourism.
