Interview: Quentin Bisch on Cedrus Intense and how memories can inspire scent

Cedrus Intense is centred on three woods: cedar, vetiver and sandalwood

Coty has revealed Chloé Cedrus Intense, a new iteration of the original Cedrus fragrance within the Atelier des Fleurs collection.

Cedrus Intense is the result of a collaboration between perfumers Quentin Bisch and Louise Turner, who have refined the original composition with enhanced woody notes. It is now available in global travel retail.

The Atelier des Fleurs collection highlights a selection of floral and botanical scents, drawing inspiration from natural elements. The range is a key collection for Chloé in travel retail and has been the star of numerous pop-up campaigns and activations over the years. Since its debut in 2019, Cedrus has been a key fragrance in the collection, combining cedar, vetiver and sandalwood with fresh, spiced top notes.

Cedrus Intense builds on this foundation, offering a deeper olfactory profile. It opens with top notes of bergamot and cardamom, maintaining the fresh introduction of the original Cedrus while delivering additional depth. At its heart, the fragrance features the signature Chloé rose, complemented with cypriol which introduces subtle leather undertones.

The base is comprised of three woods bringing diverse facets and a distinct character: Chinese cedar, Indian sand vetiver and Australian sandalwood.

Quentin Bisch is a long-time Chloé Perfumer and was also the creator of Chloé Nomade

The Moodie Davitt Report sat down Quentin Bisch, one half of the perfumer duo behind Chloé’s Cedrus Intense, to discuss how memory can shape fragrances. In the Q&A below, he explores his journey as a perfumer and his evolving relationship with the Chloé brand.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind Cedrus and what it brings to the Chloé Atelier des Fleurs collection?

The target of the brief was to express intimate memories. Perfumers needed to dive into their past to reveal something inspiring for a perfume. For me, it was a memory from childhood when my father surprised my mother with a bouquet made entirely of branches and leaves. This unexpected gesture left a lasting impression on me.

Cedrus is built around a woody structure with cedarwood, sandalwood and vetiver as the key components. The top notes include cardamom, a spicy, fresh note that gives transparency and fluidity to the fragrance, reminiscent of a crushed green branch.

How does Cedrus Intense fit into the Chloé Atelier des Fleurs collection?

Cedrus blends personal inspiration with a modern approach to woody scents. It includes subtle floral notes to add humidity and transparency, making it both fresh and contemporary. This aligns well with Chloé’s ethos of effortless simplicity and natural elegance.

Can you share some background about your journey as a perfumer and your relationship with Chloé?

My journey with Chloé has been special, starting with the creation of Nomade. Each fragrance we develop expresses a facet of Chloé’s identity, evolving with fashion trends while staying true to the brand’s DNA.

Chloé’s fragrances are known for their natural, effortless appeal, which I strive to capture in each creation.

What makes Cedrus Intense stand out in the Atelier des Fleurs line, and how does the fragrance focus on sustainability?

Cedrus stands out due to its deeply personal inspiration and the emotional connection I have with the story behind it. The fragrance has a modernity that nods to something vintage, evoking a positive nostalgia. It’s a distinctive blend of woody and fresh notes, creating an emotionally loaded perfume.

Sustainability is a core focus. We use upcycled citrus co-extracted from other processes, reducing energy use. This approach aligns with our commitment to green energy and low-carbon footprints, which is integral to all our perfumes.

Cedrus Intense reflects Chloé’s focus on craftsmanship and innovation in fragrance design

How has the perception of fragrance changed in recent years?

The pandemic has shifted perceptions, with people reconnecting with their emotions and the environment. Perfume has become a way to enhance one’s emotional experience, adding colour and depth to daily life. This heightened awareness and appreciation for fragrance have made it an integral part of personal expression. ✈
