Occupational Summary

The Research Data Manager is responsible for supporting the research program of the Heat Policy Innovation Hub, particularly managing the data acquisition, curation, and outputs from the Heat Hub research program and its partners, both internal and external to Duke University. The data manager serves as a resource for program staff and its partners, and will curate, manage, and visualize the data for program projects as well as provide spatial analysis as needed. The focus of this position is to provide guidance and support to program staff on identifying and acquiring data based on program and project needs, manage the authorization and data access processes, develop the appropriate and sustainable policies and procedures for the data management of the Heat Policy Innovation Hub, and to visualize data and conduct spatial analysis for Heat Hub projects. This position will have a one year term period with the possibility of extension upon perfomanace and grant funding. Position at this time will also be part-time with less than 30 hours per week.

 

The Research Data Manager will report to the Heat Hub Area Director at the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability leading the university’s external engagement activity for the Duke Climate Commitment.

 

Work Performed

  • Develop protocols and implement workflows for uploading and sharing data with and from internal and external collaborators.
  • Work with program staff to identify data needs to answer research questions, particularly those requiring proxy data, sensitive or protected data, and proprietary data.
  • Serve as the primary communication channel with external collaborators, sponsors, and subcontractors as it relates to data acquisition, management, and access.
  • Perform data transformation and data visualization using various platforms, such as ArcGIS, to communicate findings with multiple research teams.

 

  • Partner with investigators to draft Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications and oversee the process of IRB submission and approval.
  • Partner with investigators and partners to draft and facilitate Data Management and Sharing Plans and collaborate with leadership to review, negotiate, and execute data use and data transfer agreements to ensure all follow university, federal, and sponsor requirements.
  • Work with program staff and investigators to review data management requirements for post- award grants.
  • Participate in discussions with internal and external partners to review and prioritize data deliverables, understanding the research questions and goals under discussion.
  • Create and approve templates for data curation and acquisition and to inform program reports and publications.

EDUCATION/TRAINING

 

Completion of a Bachelor degree in environmental or computer science, public health, or related field. Advanced knowledge and experience with ArcGIS and other ESRI products a requirement. Experience with public and proprietary datasets, particularly environmental datasets, a requirement.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

Two years of data management or research experience.

 

 

Anticipated Pay Range:

Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $43,888.00 to USD $70,300.00.
