GreenGo Energy secures first African agreement in Mauritania to develop large-scale green hydrogen project

We are thrilled to announce the signing of our first African agreement, marking a pivotal step in the company’s mission to advance the global green hydrogen economy. The agreement, signed by Mr. Mohamed Khaled, Minister of Energy and Petroleum and Karsten Nielsen, CEO of GreenGo Energy, grants GreenGo Energy access to more than 100,000 hectares of land near Nouakchott, Mauritania, to develop the transformative Megaton Moon Green Hydrogen Project.

Karsten Nielsen, CEO of GreenGo Energy, says :

This is a landmark moment for GreenGo Energy and a testament to our commitment to delivering large-scale green hydrogen projects that can reshape communities and economies,

Mauritania’s unique combination of abundant renewable resources, strategic location, and forward-thinking policies – including the enactment of Africa’s first Green Hydrogen Code – positions it as a leader in the global energy transition. With highly competitive production costs, the country offers a compelling environment for investment. We are honored to play a role in this journey.”

The Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mr. Mohamed Khaled continues:

I am delighted to formalize this framework agreement with the Danish company GreenGo Energy.

This demonstrates the private sector’s continued confidence in the development of green hydrogen projects in Mauritania, despite global uncertainties surrounding demand.”

Entering the development phase

With this agreement now in place, GreenGo Energy enters the development phase of the project. During this period, we will conduct detailed site and geotechnical surveys, meteorological data collection, and undertake feasibility studies.

Anders Heine Jensen, Head of PtX at GreenGo Energy states,

The Megaton Moon Project is a game-changer, not just for Mauritania but for the entire green hydrogen sector,

“Our strategic location south of Nouakchott gives us a unique advantage – proximity to infrastructure, a stronger link to community development, and the ability to provide surplus water for green farming initiatives as well as support to the domestic industrial development such as of production of green steel. This project will bring tangible benefits to the entire region.”

A large-scale vision for transformation

The Megaton Moon Project adopts a phased approach to scalability, ensuring alignment with market demand and supply chain readiness between 2029 and 2033. Full capacity will include 6 GW of electrolysis, 6.8 GW of onshore wind, and 6.3 GWp of solar PV. Phase 1, set for completion by the end of 2029, will deploy 500 MW of electrolysis, 600 MW of onshore wind, and 600 MWp of solar PV, producing approximately 339,000 tons of green ammonia annually.

Anders Heine Jensen continues,

Scaling in phases is critical in a nascent market like green hydrogen,

“This approach allows us to adapt to supply chain challenges and evolving demand while securing offtake agreements that ensure long-term sustainability.”

Mauritania offers unique advantages for green hydrogen production:

  • Exceptional resources: World-class solar and wind energy potential
  • Strategic location: Coastal access for water desalination and export
  • Economic edge: Production costs up to 50% lower than Northern Europe
  • Favorable policies: A proven track record of attracting global energy development
  • Market access: Close proximity to European demand centers

Empowering Mauritania’s growth

GreenGo Energy is committed to fostering socioeconomic progress in Mauritania. This includes the development of an education and vocational training program in partnership with Zealand Business College (ZBC) in Denmark to equip the local workforce with the skills needed to support the green energy transition.

brahima Diagana, Country Manager at GreenGo Energy in Mauritania, emphasizes:

GreenGo Energy is not just building a project; we are building a future,

“Our work will deliver more than energy – it will provide water, low-cost green energy, jobs, and opportunities to the communities that need them most, driving long-term, sustainable development.”

Financing and expertise

The project will be financed through GreenGo Energy’s partnership model, involving strategic and large-scale investors with a proven track record in the green energy sector. Delivered via GreenGo Energy’s 360-degree full-service platform, the project reflects the company’s long-standing expertise in executing complex, large-scale renewable energy projects.

Transforming Mauritania’s future

The vision for Megaton Moon extends far beyond energy production. By addressing chronic water, power, and resource shortages, the project will help transform Nouakchott and surrounding areas into thriving hubs of green industrial and urban development.

Karsten Nielsen, concludes:

This project represents a new paradigm for Mauritania—a future where abundant, low-cost green energy and water catalyze socioeconomic growth,

“We’re proud to take this step alongside Mauritania as we work together to build a brighter, sustainable future.”
