How EV Startup DEVOT Motors Is Revving Up Innovation Engine To Redefine Green Mobility

When did you last see an electric two-wheeler zip past your street and take notice?

Such a query may astound everyone if we are not discussing the highly anticipated Harley-Davidson LiveWire or an Evoke Urban S. Other EV2Ws are now too familiar. People with a budget for green mobility or delivery executives riding cargo bikes are using them all the time.

Does it mean the entry of a brand new EV two-wheeler, an electric motorcycle to be precise, will be lost in a crowded market when the prototype is rolled out at scale?

Not really, says Varun Deo Panwar, who holds an engineering degree in computer science from Coventry University, UK and has led many high-profile technology projects at global companies (think cloudBuy, Samsung and Estée Lauder). Given his background in innovation, it is not surprising that Panwar has his own set of design and engineering ideas for a state-of-the-art e-motorcycle he has recently developed from the ground up.

Panwar’s five-year-old startup DEVOT Motors is among the new crop of EV innovators keen to tackle some of the most pressing challenges: Rising pollution and carbon footprints, skyrocketing fuel costs and the need for smart, power-packed electric transportation. Devot’s maiden prototype was unveiled in Auto Expo 2023, one of the most prestigious automotive events, and Devot will kick-start mass production in 2025.

A quick look at the specifications available, positions the e-motorcycle on the top rung when it comes to performance and style. It features a 5 kW battery pack and claims a of up to 200 km range on a full charge and a maximum speed of up to 120 km per hour. The two-wheeler boasts a smart battery management system, enabling a 60 km range after one hour of charging, while a full charge takes about three hours.

The eco-friendly vehicle has been designed for city rides and long-distance travel (the founder made no promises about offroading). Nevertheless, it may have a competitive price tag of around INR 1.75 lakhs, making advanced EV technology accessible to more riders (more on its key features later).

Asked why he decided to explore EV for his first entrepreneurial journey after nearly two decades of experience across industries, Panwar cited his commitment to sustainability and passion for innovation. “The idea of building something impactful has always driven me. I want to inspire a new generation of mobility enthusiasts while contributing to a cleaner, greener planet” he said.

DEVOT will cater to both B2B and B2C sectors as it moves to full-scale production. It has yet to raise institutional funding but has been supported by iStart Rajasthan, a state government initiative for handholding young ventures in critical areas like innovation, business strategy development and sustainable growth.

The startup is now obtaining several prototype approvals and certifications required for commercial production. Among these is Type Approval Certification, a comprehensive process to assess a vehicle’s compliance with global and local standards for safety, performance and environmental impact.

“All clearances are expected within a few months, subject to review and feedback from the authorities. So, we are working on production readiness, investments and a global launch. However, the EV will be launched first in India’s key urban markets in the next 2025,” shared Panwar.

From Building A Prototype To Chalking Out A Business Plan

Although DEVOT is not Panwar’s first venture into the world of innovation, it is his first entrepreneurial endeavour and the culmination of his design, engineering and QA expertise. His exposure to global markets also gained him valuable insights into global consumers’ requirements and preferences, a critical factor for navigating a highly competitive EV market.

Instead of churning out slapdash solutions and a hurried product, the founder invested significant time and effort to assemble a diversified team of experts, including designers, engineers and industry veterans. The aim was to focus on research, technological possibilities, market gaps and consumer concerns about performance and safety. After months of brainstorming, R&D and testing, the product was refined to meet global benchmarks, guided by two core principles: Customer satisfaction and sustainable mobility.

Panwar points out how the name DEVOT encapsulates the startup’s mission. “DEVOT stands for our steadfast devotion to innovation, sustainability and uncompromising quality. It can also be an acronym for Development of Electric Vehicles with Zero-Emission Technology. Either way, it speaks of innovation with responsibility, paving the path towards a cleaner, greener future.”

DEVOT has developed a multi-channel business model to diversify revenue streams and drive sustainable growth. In the B2C space, it will sell its EV and branded accessories (helmets, chargers and more) online and through experience centres and authorised dealers, targeting urban, eco-conscious consumers.

On the B2B front, it will collaborate with fleet operators, delivery services and corporate clients, offering leasing and subscription models. In addition, it will earn from embedded IoT services, software upgrades and after-sales support, including maintenance packages and extended warranties.

Will DEVOT EV’s Standout Features Make It A Game Changer?

DEVOT’s e-motorcycle boasts impressive features, blending cutting-edge technology with stylish design and convenience. These include:

Long range: The battery covers up to 200 km on a full charge and 60 km after an hour. This helps address one of the most common concerns – range anxiety.

Fast charging: The onboard charger can fully recharge the battery from a domestic power socket in three hours, making it convenient for everyday use.

Advanced motor technology: A powerful motor delivers seamless acceleration, excellent torque and high performance, making it suitable for city commutes and long highway rides.

Smart digital cluster: The intuitive digital dashboard offers real-time information on speed, battery status and navigation, providing riders with an enhanced, data-driven experience. The e-bike also comes with a keyless system and an anti-theft security feature.

Retro-futuristic design: Inspired by vintage aesthetics and modern sensibilities, the e-bike sports a sleek yet classic look. It has been engineered to offer agility for urban commuting and stability for highway rides, making it a versatile choice. Its design is not only about stylish looks but functionality as well. The storage space within the tank allows riders to securely store their helmets, a unique but highly convenient feature.

Compliance with global standards: Every component of the e-motorcycle, from the battery pack to the electrical systems, meets rigorous international safety and quality standards, ensuring durability and reliability.

How iStart Rajasthan Collaborated With DEVOT

The startup gained momentum due to its strategic alliance with iStart Rajasthan, a state government initiative designed to drive innovation and entrepreneurship. The programme has provided critical support from training and skill development, regulatory guidance, networking opportunities, marketing and promotion.

“The collaboration has helped us navigate the complex regulatory landscape and connect with industry experts and potential investors for further growth in an increasingly competitive market. We will also seek its support to raise awareness about our product and brand. This will help us gain the visibility we need to bolster our branding and tap into new markets within the state and beyond,” said Panwar.

In the future, DEVOT plans to leverage iStart Rajasthan’s network of R&D facilities and testing centres for innovation and quality compliance.

The Journey Ahead For DEVOT Motors

Over the years, India has emerged as a burgeoning EV two-wheeler market. In 2024, 2W registrations zoomed 33% YoY to 11.4 Lakh and their market share is expected to rise upwards of 13% by 2016-27, per a Jefferies report, compared to a meagre 5% in FY24. Annual sales in the Indian EV2W market, the second largest globally, will also witness phenomenal growth.

The market size is estimated to reach $12.4 Bn by FY31 from $1.2 Bn in FY23, with a whopping CAGR of 40.34% during the forecast period (FY24-FY31). Globally, the EV two-wheeler market is projected to reach $186 Bn by 2030 from $105.3 Bn in 2024.

Given its pan-India and global expansion plans, these numbers are encouraging for a new entrant like DEVOT. Once the startup establishes a strong foothold in the domestic market, it will target global markets, including the UK, the EU and the Middle East, and optimise its supply chain to scale production.

DEVOT will also push product innovation by harnessing advanced battery technologies, improved charging infrastructure and smart connectivity to enhance the riding experience. Its goal is to hit the profit button and carve a niche in the competitive EV two-wheeler market.

While challenging, this goal is achievable, even in India – where the top four manufacturers of EV2Ws have captured 77% of the market. DEVOT’s success will rely on effectively executing production, tapping into global markets, and continuously innovating to meet the growing market demand.
