Swedish startup receives funding to transform construction waste into green building materials

Recoma, a Haessleholm-based startup revolutionizing the construction industry with sustainable materials, has successfully raised €2.6 million in funding to fuel its ambitious growth plans. Specializing in transforming composite waste (a mix of paper and plastic) into durable building boards, Recoma offers a circular solution to the sector’s environmental challenges. The latest round saw strong support from investors such as South Bay Ventures, Kiilto Ventures, and GES, a Czech industrial group, with the latter joining in this round. The funds will be used to scale production and secure a €2.9 million grant from Sweden’s Klimatklivet program, aimed at doubling production capacity. Recoma is targeting a tripling of sales in 2025 and plans to expand internationally, seeking European venture capital financing next year. Despite early losses, the company is set on achieving profitability by 2027.

Recoma is at the forefront of sustainable construction solutions, offering a unique approach to tackling both waste and emissions in the industry. With the construction sector responsible for a significant portion of CO2 emissions and waste in Sweden, Recoma saw an opportunity to make a difference by recycling composite waste—paper and plastic materials that would otherwise be incinerated—into high-performing building boards. These products not only provide a low-carbon alternative to traditional construction materials but also boast up to 90% CO2e savings, all while utilizing a process that generates zero waste, no additives, and uses no water.

Founded by Max Rosenberg in 2021, with a bold vision of creating a circular economy in construction, Recoma’s mission is to contribute to a more sustainable future by offering building materials that don’t contribute to further environmental harm. The company’s process allows for its products to be recycled repeatedly, making it a truly circular solution. Backed by a strong team including CEO Max Rosenberg and key personnel in sales and logistics, Recoma is driving innovation with a focus on sustainable growth and environmental responsibility. Their solution not only addresses pressing climate concerns but also offers the construction industry a chance to reduce waste while maintaining high standards of performance.

“We have South Bay Ventures with Rickard Dahlberg from NREP (a real estate company, editor’s note), Kiilto Ventures, former Skanska CEO Gunnar Hagman, and Byggmax with us from before. In this round, GES, a Czech industrial group and one of our suppliers, has also joined,” says Max Rosenberg to Impact Loop.
