ICON builds sustainable housing projects in the Mueller community
The company ICON has announced a new construction project that will be realized in collaboration with Michael Hsu Office of Architecture and the developer Catellus. Starting in 2025, a dozen two-story homes will be built in the Mueller community in Austin, Texas. In addition, a selection of the one-bedroom homes will be offered as part of the Mueller Affordable Homes Program.
The planned homes range from 60 to 220 square feet and include one to three bedrooms. Sales prices start in the mid-$300,000 range and go up to over a million dollars. The homes are located just minutes from downtown Austin and offer an attractive location with views of the surrounding green space. The Mueller community is known for its sustainable urban development that combines modern residential architecture with expansive parks, stores and dining options.
“Mueller is an incredible Austin community to bring our resilient, energy efficient ICON homes to,” said Jared Kuhn, VP of Real Estate Development and Sales at ICON. “As some of the last newly constructed homes in the highly sought-after community, the to-be-built homes will be located along the Southwest Greenway and offer unobstructed and protected views of the golf course and walking trails. We’ve been looking to collaborate with Michael Hsu for years and are excited to bring to life the elevated designs and offer one-, two- and three-bedroom homes at various price points.”
This is the first ICON construction project in Austin since 2021. The company previously built a large 3D-printed housing development in Georgetown, Texas, and is currently working on completing 104 additional homes for the Community First! Village in Austin, a housing project for homeless people.
“Although there is more commercial construction to be completed over the next few years, we’re nearing the end of newly constructed homes in Mueller, and we wanted to celebrate Mueller’s two decades of residential innovation with yet another advancement,” said Sergio Negrete, Principal and Senior Vice President of Arterra Development, which manages Mueller’s redevelopment on behalf of Catellus Development Corp. in partnership with the City of Austin.
Negrete added, “After all, Mueller is the place where impassioned professionals, City leaders and neighborhood advocates developed the unique affordable homes program, Mueller Houses, shop homes, cottage homes, courtyard homes, zero-lot-line homes and more. These 3D-printed homes also help reflect the overall goals of the community, including affordability, diversity and sustainability.”
